Ruchir Sharma to Share Insights on Capitalism and Global Economies at Express Adda in Mumbai

Ruchir Sharma, a prominent global investor and author, will be the distinguished guest at the Express Adda event in Mumbai this Tuesday. Sharma, who serves as Chairman of Rockefeller International and Founder and Chief Investment Officer of Breakout Capital, is set to offer his expert analysis on capitalism and the factors shaping both global and domestic economies.

Sharma’s latest book, What Went Wrong with Capitalism, critiques the current state of capitalism, suggesting that government interventions have distorted the system, leading to monopolies, “zombie” firms, and an increase in billionaire wealth. He argues that these distortions have contributed to slower economic growth and rising public discontent. According to Sharma, “Governments have inadvertently fueled the rise of monopolies and a bailout culture, which have badly distorted capitalism.”

At the Express Adda, Sharma will discuss these themes with Anant Goenka, Executive Director of The Indian Express Group, and K. V. Kamath, Chairman of the National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development (NaBFID) and Jio Financial Services. Sharma’s perspectives are highly regarded by policymakers and investors worldwide, making his insights particularly valuable during this period of economic uncertainty.

Sharma’s career spans over two decades, including a notable tenure at Morgan Stanley Investment Management, where he managed nearly $20 billion in assets. He transitioned to Rockefeller International in 2022, bringing his extensive experience in emerging markets to his new role. Sharma is also known for his passion for politics and has covered numerous national and state elections in India since 1998. His observations from these travels are detailed in his 2019 book, Democracy on the Road.

In addition to his professional achievements, Sharma is a dedicated athlete who competes in 100m and 200m sprints. He represented India in the World Masters Athletic Championship in 2011. His interests extend to wildlife and cinema, with a keen participation in international film festivals.

Sharma’s contributions as a writer have appeared in major publications including The Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Foreign Affairs, The Guardian, and Foreign Policy. His global perspective and comprehensive analysis continue to influence discussions on economic and political issues.
