PhonePe Unveils ‘Credit Line on UPI’ Feature, Enabling Short-Term Credit for Merchant Transactions

PhonePe, a leading digital payments platform, has launched a groundbreaking feature called ‘Credit Line on UPI,’ expanding the capabilities of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) to include short-term credit options for both consumers and merchants. This innovation follows the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) recent move to broaden UPI’s scope to accommodate pre-approved credit lines.

The new feature allows users to link their credit lines from participating banks directly to their PhonePe UPI accounts. This integration provides a flexible payment solution, enabling users to make merchant payments using their credit lines while managing their monthly expenses more effectively.

Key Features of ‘Credit Line on UPI’:

  • Seamless Integration: Consumers can now use their pre-approved credit lines during checkout at millions of merchants integrated with PhonePe Payment Gateway (PG).
  • Flexible Payments: The feature offers a convenient way to manage short-term credit, enhancing the flexibility of digital payments.
  • Merchant Benefits: Merchants using PhonePe PG can easily integrate the ‘Credit Line on UPI’ option, providing customers with an additional payment method and potentially increasing sales.

The launch of this feature comes amid a notable rise in UPI transactions, which increased by 3.95% month-on-month (MoM) to 14.44 billion in July from 13.89 billion in June. The expansion reflects the growing adoption of UPI and the increasing need for innovative payment solutions.

Deep Agrawal, Head of Payments at PhonePe, emphasized the significance of the new offering: “This is the second offering that will unlock the potential of credit usage on UPI, following the tremendous success of Rupay Credit Cards on UPI. We believe digital payments in India are growing strength to strength, and PhonePe is committed to providing the most innovative and best-in-class solutions to our customers.”

The introduction of ‘Credit Line on UPI’ underscores PhonePe’s commitment to enhancing the digital payment experience in India, catering to both consumer needs and merchant requirements with advanced financial tools.
