Manish Tiwary Steps Down as Head of Amazon India; Amit Agarwal to Oversee Operations

Manish Tiwary, the head of Amazon India’s operations, has announced his resignation to explore new opportunities, concluding an eight-year tenure with the e-commerce giant. Tiwary, who joined Amazon India from Unilever in 2016, has served as vice president before becoming country manager in 2020. In his role, he led the consumer and seller services vertical for four years.

Tiwary will remain with Amazon until October, facilitating a smooth transition. Amit Agarwal, Vice President of India and emerging markets, will take on a more prominent role, working closely with the team to ensure continuity and growth.

Amazon’s statement highlighted India’s importance to the company’s global strategy. The firm remains optimistic about future opportunities to innovate and transform digital experiences for customers and businesses alike.

Amazon India faces strong competition from Walmart-owned Flipkart and Meesho in the rapidly growing e-commerce market, which is currently valued at $70 billion and is projected to expand to $325 billion by 2030. In response, Amazon has significantly invested in India, including a $100 million investment in Amazon Seller Services earlier this year. Tiwary previously noted the company’s commitment to digitizing 10 million small businesses in India by 2025.

In a related update, the Indian government has recently abolished the 2% equalisation levy on digital services provided by offshore tech firms, which had previously strained relations between New Delhi and Washington. This move is expected to benefit global e-commerce companies, including American firms like Amazon.
