In a dramatic shift, Gautam Adani and his family have ascended to the top position on the list, surpassing Mukesh Ambani for the first time.
Adani Tops the List with Remarkable Growth
Gautam Adani’s fortune has skyrocketed, with his wealth increasing by an astonishing 95% to reach Rs 1,161,800 crore. This surge reflects the impressive performance of Adani Group companies, which have seen substantial gains over the past year. Notable among these is Adani Ports, which experienced a 98% rise in share price due to improved utilization and the acquisition of new ports and terminals. The energy sector also contributed significantly, with Adani Energy, Adani Gas, Adani Transmission, and Adani Power averaging a 76% increase in share prices.
The MSCI’s decision to lift restrictions on Adani Group securities has further bolstered investor confidence, leading to a stabilizing outlook for key stocks such as Adani Enterprises and Ambuja Cements. The Hurun report highlights that the wealth of the Adani family trust and international ventures is attributed to Gautam Adani and his family, underscoring their leading position.
Mukesh Ambani Falls to Second Place
Mukesh Ambani, who previously held the top spot, now ranks second on the 2024 list with a wealth of Rs 1,014,700 crore. Despite this shift, Ambani remains a key figure in the Indian business landscape, with his empire encompassing major sectors including energy, petrochemicals, and telecommunications.
Shiv Nadar and Cyrus Poonawalla Secure Top Positions
Shiv Nadar and his family, the founders of HCL Technologies, have secured the third spot with a wealth of Rs 314,000 crore. Vaccine mogul Cyrus S. Poonawalla, along with his family from the Serum Institute of India, holds the fourth position. Dilip Shanghvi, the founder of Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, completes the top five.

Over the past five years, six individuals have consistently featured in the top 10 of the India Rich List. This group includes Gautam Adani, Mukesh Ambani, Shiv Nadar, Cyrus S. Poonawalla, Gopichand Hinduja, and Radhakishan Damani. Adani’s remarkable growth of Rs 1,021,600 crore stands out as the highest increase among the top 10.
