Ex-IAF Top Gun Joins Olee.Space to Build India’s Next-Gen Laser & Space Defence Systems

In a major boost to India’s defence-tech ecosystem, photonics and defence technology startup Olee.Space has appointed Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Rajiva Ranjan VM (Retd) as its Strategic Defence Advisor.

With over 30 years in the Indian Air Force (IAF), AVM Ranjan brings unmatched experience in fighter operations, defence technology, and integrated warfare, and will play a key role in helping Olee.Space accelerate the development of next-generation military systems.

Guiding India’s Future in Optics, Space & Laser Warfare

As part of his new role, AVM Ranjan will advise Olee.Space on building products for optics and space-based defence systems.

One of the big focus areas: high-energy laser systems designed for multi-domain and multi-level warfare—a frontier that global powers are racing to master.

Founder & CEO James Solomon said:

“We’re thrilled to welcome AVM Ranjan to Olee.Space. His crisp experience in operational strategy, technology adoption in the Air Force, and openness towards futuristic missions will be invaluable as we design cutting-edge systems that elevate Bharat’s defence and strategic communication capabilities.”

A Stellar IAF Career

Commissioned into the Fighter Stream of the IAF in 1987, AVM Ranjan is a Fighter Combat Leader, Qualified Flying Instructor, and an alumnus of the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, and the National Defence College, New Delhi.

  • Logged nearly 3,850 hours of accident-free flying on 15 fighter and trainer aircraft
  • Commanded elite units including the MiG Operational Flying Training Unit and two forward air bases
  • Held senior leadership roles such as:
    • Assistant Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (ICT)
    • Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Operations – Space)

Why This Matters

India is rapidly pushing the boundaries of defence and aerospace technologies, especially in photonics, laser-based systems, and anti-drone warfare.

Olee.Space, with the guidance of a veteran like AVM Ranjan, aims to:

  • Strengthen national security
  • Boost strategic self-reliance
  • Position India as a leader in next-gen defence innovations

AVM Ranjan himself summed it up best:

“Olee.Space’s work in photonics, laser-based communication, and anti-drone technologies has the potential to transform India’s defence preparedness. I look forward to contributing to solutions that strengthen national security and technological self-reliance.”

Final Word

The appointment of AVM Rajiva Ranjan VM (Retd) signals that Olee.Space isn’t just another deeptech startup—it’s gearing up to play a strategic role in shaping India’s future defence systems.

With his expertise in space operations, integrated warfare, and next-gen defence tech, Olee.Space is positioning itself at the heart of Bharat’s push for cutting-edge military innovation.
