Deeptech Breakthrough! LightSpeed Photonics Raises .5M to Supercharge AI Data Centers

LightSpeed Photonics Secures $6.5 Million Funding

Deeptech startup LightSpeed Photonics, known for its cutting-edge optical interconnects for data centers, has raised $6.5 million in a pre-Series A funding round led by pi Ventures. With this round, the startup has now raised a total of $8.5 million since its founding in 2021.

Other participants in the round include 500 Global, India Accelerator, and returning investors 8X Ventures and Java Capital, along with several angel investors from the Bay Area.

Revolutionizing Data Movement in AI and HPC Systems

Compact, High-Speed Optical Interconnects

Founded by Rohin Y and Ramana Pamidighantam, LightSpeed Photonics is developing short-wavelength laser technology for AI and high-performance computing (HPC) systems.

The company’s optical interconnects promise:

  • Higher data transfer speeds
  • Lower energy consumption
  • Smaller hardware footprint

This technology is designed to improve data movement efficiency in AI data centers, a critical bottleneck as AI models and HPC workloads grow exponentially.

Why It Matters

Modern AI systems and HPC workloads demand faster data transfer and energy-efficient hardware. LightSpeed Photonics’ solution addresses both challenges, offering a path to faster, greener, and more compact data center infrastructure.

Funding Round Highlights

  • Lead Investor: pi Ventures
  • Other Participants: 500 Global, India Accelerator, 8X Ventures, Java Capital, Bay Area angels
  • Total Raised So Far: $8.5 million
  • Use of Funds: Expand R&D, scale production, and accelerate deployment of optical interconnects for AI and HPC systems

This funding positions LightSpeed Photonics to advance its deeptech solutions and capture the growing market for AI-optimized data center infrastructure.

The Team Behind LightSpeed Photonics

Rohin Y and Ramana Pamidighantam bring deep expertise in photonics and optical engineering. Together, they are focused on solving one of the most pressing problems in AI and HPC — efficient and high-speed data movement.

Their vision is to make data centers faster, smaller, and more energy-efficient while enabling AI systems to reach their full potential.

Why Investors Are Excited

Investors see LightSpeed Photonics as a deeptech company with transformative potential. As AI workloads grow, efficient optical interconnects will become increasingly critical. This technology could redefine how data centers handle massive-scale AI computations, giving LightSpeed Photonics a first-mover advantage in a rapidly expanding market.

The Road Ahead

With the new funds, LightSpeed Photonics plans to:

If successful, LightSpeed Photonics could play a pivotal role in the next generation of AI infrastructure, making data centers faster, greener, and more capable than ever before.
