BHEL Secures ₹11,000 Crore Contract from Adani Power for Major Thermal Power Projects

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has announced that it has been awarded a ₹11,000 crore contract from Adani Power and its subsidiary, Mahan Energen Ltd (MEL). The contract involves setting up three supercritical thermal power projects, each with a capacity of 2×800 MW. The projects will be located in Kawai, Rajasthan, and Mahan, Madhya Pradesh.

BHEL’s role includes supplying equipment and overseeing the erection and commissioning of the projects. This includes providing boilers, turbines, generators, associated auxiliaries, and control and instrumentation systems. The timeline for completion is 49 months for Kawai Phase-II, 52 months for Kawai Phase-III, and 55 months for Mahan Phase-III.

In its April-June quarter (Q1 FY25) results, BHEL reported a 9.6% increase in revenue, totaling ₹5,484 crore compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, Adani Power saw a substantial 95% rise in its consolidated profit before tax (PBT), reaching ₹4,483 crore for the same period. This increase was driven by higher EBITDA and reduced finance costs. Power sale volumes also rose by 38% to 24.1 billion units, reflecting a surge in power demand.

Adani Power’s installed thermal power capacity now stands at 15,210 MW across eight plants in various states, with an additional 40 MW solar power plant in Gujarat. This expansion aligns with the ongoing strong growth in power demand across India, with aggregate demand increasing by 10.6% year-on-year and peak demand reaching a record 250 GW.
